About

Canberra Cat Fix is an independent community project that raises money so we can offer subsidised cat desexing to low income families in Canberra.

Canberra and surrounds are overrun with tiny kittens, with the last breeding season still continuing from spring. While kittens are adorable, our local cat shelters are over capacity, and our volunteers are exhausted as well as financially depleted.

Over 150,000 kittens and cats are put to sleep in Australia every year simply because there are not enough homes for them. By desexing as many cats as possible we are preventing thousands of unnecessary deaths.

Cat desexing can be expensive in Canberra, especially if there are multiple pets in one household. Male cats can cost upwards of $200, with female cats sometimes priced at over $400, higher if on heat or pregnant. If a cat owner can’t afford to get one cat desexed, they can’t afford desexing for a whole litter of kittens either.

Where a community is not vigilant about desexing it leads to a situation, like the current one in Canberra, where kittens are being given away for free or sold for $30+ on Facebook, with no undertaking by the potential buyer to have them desexed, even though it is a strict liability offence to have an undesexed cat.

Canberra Cat Fix is a not-for-proft project run entirely by volunteers. Donations and money raised through fundraising events is how we are able to subsidise the cost of desexing. Without donations, Canberra Cat FIx would not exist.

We are grateful for any contributions. Every dollar makes a difference to these furry little faces. To donate please visit our fundraising page.
